Respiratory season hit hard and early this year. Flu, COVID-19 and RSV are circulating within our community, state, and nation-wide. Please keep your child home if they are sick! Please remember simple guidelines to help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses such as hand washing, covering your coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick. It is also recommended to do a home COVID-19 test if your child has any symptoms of illness. You can get these free from the school or library. Here are some guidelines on when to keep your child home from school: · If your child has or has had a temperature over 100 degrees in the last 24 hours. It is not appropriate sending your child to school with a fever. This means they are contagious and will continue to be until they are without a fever for 24 - 48 hours without medication. Even if you give your child medication and their fever breaks, they should not be in school. When your child has a fever they will not learn as well because they are not feeling well and they will be exposing other children to the illness. Children also need time to rest in order to heal. · Vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. If your child vomits or has diarrhea more than once in a day, or they have a fever along with it- keep your child home from school. If your child is spending most of their time at school feeling sick or in the bathroom, not much learning is getting done. · An unexplained rash. Anytime a rash is associated with a fever your child may not come to school until the fever is gone for 24 hours without medication. A fever associated with a rash could mean that the rash is contagious and could be something like the chickenpox. Even if your child does not have a fever and the rash is not contagious, they can be uncomfortable and itchy and learning can be impaired. · Asthma flare ups and headache, cough, sore throat of congestion that are severe enough to interfere with attention to school work.
