Good morning Skoglund Middle School Families,

Skoglund Middle School students will be taking the Colorado CMAS State Assessment on Tuesday, April 7th; Wednesday, April 8th; and Thursday, April 9th. Our 8th grade students will also test on Thursday, April 16th.

We are excited for our students to demonstrate the learning and growth they have worked so hard to achieve this year. Our staff has been intentional in preparing students, and now it is their opportunity to show what they know!

Here are a few simple tips to help students do their very best:

-Get a good night’s rest each evening.
-Eat a healthy breakfast to start the day strong.
-Arrive at school on time. Students should be in the building by 7:45 a.m. each morning.
-Encourage your student to stay positive and give their best effort during each testing session.

Attendance is especially important during testing, and we are working toward our goal of 100% attendance. Every day counts, and we appreciate your partnership in supporting your child’s success.

Our ARC/CVA students hosted an Easter Egg Hunt for our preschoolers and toddlers!

From running around collecting eggs to laughing with friends, the day was full of energy and fun. Our students did an incredible job helping the little ones and making sure everyone had a great time.

And of course, the biggest surprise—THE EASTER BUNNY showed up!

Next week, Skoglund Middle School students will begin taking the Colorado CMAS State Assessment. Testing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. It is very important that your student attends school each day, arrives on time, and is well rested so they can do their best.

Below is our testing schedule:

Unit 1: 8:30 – 9:35 AM
Unit 2: 10:00 – 11:05 AM
Unit 3: 1:30 – 2:35 PM

Wednesday, April 8, 2026 – ELA (Computer-Based)

Unit 1: 8:30 – 10:00 AM
Unit 2: 1:30 – 3:00 PM

Thursday, April 9, 2026 – ELA (Computer-Based)

Unit 3: 8:30 – 10:00 AM

When finished testing, students will return to regular schedule 4th period through 7th period.

📢 AD's Corner: Spring Sports Edition Welcome Back, Viking Nation! We are officially in full swing with our spring season! While the weather might still be catching up, our athletes are already bringing the heat to the track and the diamond. 🏈 Looking Ahead: New Faces on the Gridiron I am officially proud to welcome Coach Zaire Banner as our Head Football Coach and Coach Cole Webb as our Head Assistant Coach to the Viking Family! After a lengthy process, we are excited to announce this big step for the football program. We will be introducing them during the upcoming VAA meeting on the first Monday in April, so please join us! 👟 High School Track: Dominating the Field We are now in our third week of spring sports, and the track team is doing phenomenal! This past weekend at the Wayne Thomas Memorial Track Meet at Sangre De Cristo, our athletes showed exactly what they are made of: • Girls Team: Took 1st PLACE with 130 points—finishing a massive 70 points clear of second place! • Boys Team: Tied for 4th place! • Performance: We saw Personal Records (PRs) across the board as our team battled the cold and wind to compete. I am so darn proud of this group! Next Up: The team travels to the Salida Invitational this Saturday. Back to work! ⚾ Baseball: Growth on the Diamond Our baseball team is currently 0-3 on the season, but they are improving every single day! Here is the lineup for the coming week: • Tuesday, March 31: @ La Veta (Doubleheader) at 2:00 PM. • Friday, April 3: @ Ignacio (Doubleheader) at 1:00 PM. • Saturday, April 4: @ Buena Vista (Varsity) at 12:00 PM. 🧒 Middle School Sports: Season Openers Middle school athletes are officially competing this week: • MS Baseball: Traveling to Sanford on Thursday at 4:30 PM and Buena Vista on Saturday following the HS game. • MS Track: We are excited to HOST the opening season meet this Friday starting at 9:30 AM. ⚖️ A Note on Culture and Accountability I want to address the circumstances that happened over the weekend. I understand and respect the concerns being shared regarding the cancellation of the varsity baseball game at Sanford on Saturday. Holding our student-athletes to higher standards and accountability is important. These young men and women are the faces of our school and community, and they are setting an example and laying a path for our youngsters to follow. While tradition is a big thing—and I wholeheartedly encourage tradition—established policy and procedure clearly outline expectations for student-athletes. This includes attendance at school and participation in required practices leading up to competition. Those types of things, along with grades and citizenship, are integral parts of having successful sports programs. When those expectations are not met, there are consequences. Holding students accountable in these situations is not about punishment, but about reinforcing responsibility and commitment. I apologize for handling it the way it was handled, however, I will never apologize for holding our student-athletes to higher standards and expectations. This is where successful programs are built. 🌟 The AD's Closing Thought Our goal is bigger than any single game.
